Announced by Apple on October 15, 2025, the entry-level SoC powers the base 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, Apple Vision Pro, and the March 2026 MacBook Air models.

Core Architecture & Specifications

Built on an advanced, third-generation 3-nanometer technology, the base M5 chip balances intense graphic tasks with power efficiency:

10-Core CPU: Configured with four performance cores and six efficiency cores. It delivers up to 15% faster multithreaded performance compared to the M4.
10-Core GPU: Built on a next-generation graphics architecture that brings up to 30% faster general graphics and a 45% uplift in ray-tracing over the M4 generation.
Memory Bandwidth: Reaches 153 GB/s, a roughly 30% increase over the preceding generation to quickly feed data to the processors.

The AI Breakthrough: Neural Accelerators

The defining design change of the M5 is its optimization for AI. In addition to an upgraded 16-core standalone Neural Engine, Apple integrated a dedicated hardware Neural Accelerator into every single compute block of the 10-core GPU.

By offloading localized machine learning tasks directly onto the shader cores, the M5 pushes over 4x the peak GPU compute performance for AI workloads compared to the M4. This makes running large language models (LLMs) locally on programs like LM Studio or diffusion models via Draw Things exponentially faster without draining the battery
